Hose reels
Fire hose reels are your first line of defense against any fire which may arise. Well before the fire fighters arrive on site, a fire hose reel can dramatically reduce any damage caused by the fire or even contain the spread of fire.
According to AS1851-2012 section 9 (routine service of fire protection system and equipment) the frequency of fire hose reels to be maintained every 6 month intervals.
6-monthly service
6-monthly service comprises of a visual inspection of the hose reel to ensure it operates accordingly and sufficiently provides water flow.
A report is produce and the yellow maintenance tag attached to the hose reel is stamped to indicate the hose reel has been serviced.
Annual service
Yearly service comprises of a visual inspection and a test that ensures hose reel works sufficiently when used in an emergency. Water pressure in the mains and a static pressure in the mains is recorded and the flow rate is also recorded and converted in litres per second.
A report is produce and the yellow maintenance tag attached to the hose reel is stamped to indicate the hose reel has been serviced.
Pro tip
Generally, hose reels located in factories are used to wash concrete and fill tanks. The internal components are made of brass and easterly worn from constant unrolling of the fire hose reel, when the hose reel begins to show signs of fatigue due to poor support and leaks, that hose reel is no longer compliant and needs to be replaced at a cost. To save money in the long term, don't use the fire hose reel as a garden hose. This will prevent you from having to constantly replace the hose reel and keep you compliant for longer. –Ronny Allard
